Arashiyama, Kyoto | A Different View Every Time
By Nihongo to Japan · Updated June 17, 2026
Arashiyama is the kind of place you visit and still want to come back to. The cherry blossoms along the Oi River, the bamboo grove that somehow stays beautiful through the crowds — each visit leaves something unexplored.
Arashiyama is the kind of place you visit and still want to return to.
I've been several times, each time taking a different route, each time feeling like there's still something I haven't found. The area is dense with things to see, but the atmosphere naturally makes you slow down — linger a little, reluctant to rush away.

Spring Is When Arashiyama Is at Its Most Beautiful
The cherry blossoms along the Oi River are some of the most beautiful I've seen anywhere. Trees lining the riverbank, mountain ridges rising behind them, pink-white blossoms reflected in the water — that layered depth is something no camera can fully capture. You have to be there.

On the riverside lawn, people spread mats and sit down, bringing bento or food from nearby stalls, spending an afternoon under the cherry trees.

The Candied Strawberry — Don't Leave Without One
Walking through the busy Nakanoshima area, you'll find lots of street food stalls. My must-buy every time: the candied strawberry skewer — fresh strawberries in a thin crackling sugar shell. Biting into it is deeply satisfying.
The Bamboo Grove
The bamboo path is genuinely beautiful. Towering bamboo filters sunlight into fragments, wind moves through with a sound of its own, and the sense of stillness is real. But recent years have brought huge crowds. To get that quiet shot, arrive before 6am — or simply accept it as the popular attraction it is.

Getting There
From central Kyoto, take the Randen or JR Sagano Line — about 20 minutes. Beyond the bridge and bamboo, Tenryu-ji, Nonomiya Shrine, and Jojakko-ji are all worth visiting. A full day won't be enough.
