Engetsuto, Shirahama | A Sunset You'll Never Forget
By Nihongo to Japan · Updated June 17, 2026
Engetsuto has a natural circular hole through its center. At sunset, the sun passes directly through that opening — a scene that earned it a place on Japan's 100 Best Sunsets list. It's the perfect way to end a day in Shirahama.
The sun drops faster than you expect.

Engetsuto (円月島) is a small island just offshore from Shirahama, with a natural circular arch through its center. At sunset, the sun passes through that opening — which earned it a place on Japan's 100 Best Sunsets list. The alignment isn't guaranteed; it depends on the date, the clouds, and a bit of luck.

It's the perfect thing to end a day on. The sun sinks lower, shifting from yellow to orange, the island's outline slowly becoming a silhouette. By the time it's over, the tiredness of the whole day has dissolved.
Travel Info
Engetsuto is in Shirahama-cho, Wakayama. From Shirahama Station, about 10 minutes by bus. Check that day's sunset time before going (search: 白浜 日没時間) — arrive late and you'll catch only the afterglow. Shirahama Onsen, Senjojiki, and Sandanbeki work well in the same day.
