The Southernmost Tip of Wakayama | Hashiguiiwa, a Coastline Sculpted Over Millions of Years

By Nihongo to Japan · Updated June 17, 2026

Dozens of massive rock columns pierce straight up through the ocean floor, lined up in a row stretching nearly 900 meters. Not man-made. Not art. A work completed over tens of millions of years by tectonic movement and the relentless force of waves.

Driving south from Osaka, the scenery grows emptier, quieter, more remote.

When you finally arrive at Hashiguiiwa in Kushimoto, Wakayama, you understand what 'end of the road' means — dozens of massive rock pillars rising straight out of the seafloor, lined up in a row extending nearly 900 meters. Not man-made. Not art. A work completed over tens of millions of years by tectonic shifts and wave erosion.

A Legend That Named the Rocks

The name 'Hashiguiiwa' comes from a legend: the monk Kobo Daishi made a bet with a demon to build a bridge to Ohshima Island overnight. As dawn approached, the pillars were in place but the bridge deck wasn't finished — the demon imitated a rooster to trigger sunrise early, and the bridge was frozen forever halfway done.

What remains is what we see today.

Sunrise Is the Legendary Moment

Hashiguiiwa is one of Wakayama's most famous sunrise spots. In the early morning, light cuts through the gaps between the pillars, casting long shadows. This is one of the most naturally photogenic shots in all of Wakayama.

I visited at low tide on an ordinary day — the rocky shelf exposed, walkable into the middle of the formation. The sound of waves. Rocks still slick from the retreating sea. Otherwise: just wind.
