Kyoto's Hidden Gem | Ine Funaya, Centuries-Old Fishermen's Houses Built Over the Sea
By Nihongo to Japan · Updated May 27, 2026
Tucked inside a bay on the Tango Peninsula, Kyoto, a row of centuries-old wooden houses sit directly above the water. This is Ine-cho — one of Japan's few remaining fishing villages with intact funaya boathouses. No noisy tourist crowds. Just the glow of fishing lights reflected in the still surface of the bay.
Funaya are traditional Japanese boathouses: the ground floor is a garage for fishing boats opening directly onto the bay; the second floor is the living quarters. Ine-cho has about 230 funaya still standing, designated as an Important Preservation District. Walking here feels like stepping into the Edo period.

Getting There from Osaka
Driving is the most recommended option — about 2.5 to 3 hours from central Osaka. Stop at Amanohashidate along the way for a two-destination day. If you'd rather not drive, take the Kyoto high-speed bus to Amanohashidate and transfer to a local bus to Ine — but service is infrequent, so check schedules first.

Accommodation: Book as Early as Possible
Funaya stays are managed exclusively through the Ine Town Tourism Association.
• Book 3 to 6 months ahead — popular seasons fill up fast
• The tourism office closes in the afternoon; plan to arrive before closing
• Staff will show you around after check-in

Arrive Early and Wander
Ine is small, but its charm isn't about sights — it's the atmosphere. Walk slowly along the bay. Watch fishing boats at their slips, old wooden houses reflected in the water. Time slows here. You'll be reluctant to leave.

The Most Beautiful Time: Dusk to After Dark
During the day the funaya are quiet brown wooden buildings. But from dusk into night they transform — warm yellow light from each house spills onto the calm bay, and the whole village seems to float and glow. In spring, cherry blossoms beside the boathouses layer into the lamplight.

Side Trip: Amanohashidate
While on the Tango Peninsula, Amanohashidate is unmissable — one of Japan's Three Views, about 30 minutes from Ine by car.
