Kobe Must-Visit | Nunobiki Herb Garden — Take the Ropeway Up and Find the Most Peaceful Garden in Japan

By Nihongo to Japan · Updated June 17, 2026

Up on the hillside above Kobe, with a breeze carrying the scent of herbs, lying in a hammock looking out over Osaka Bay — this is one of the most relaxed I've ever felt anywhere in Japan. And I've been twice.

Some places are worth visiting once. Some you keep coming back to.

Nunobiki Herb Garden is the second kind. I've been twice, and both times I never had enough time, both times I wanted to stay a little longer.

The ropeway is just a few minutes from Shin-Kobe Station. As it climbs, the city of Kobe and Osaka Bay spread below you. Once at the top, follow the walking trail slowly downhill, then take the ropeway back up from midway — the most relaxed way to see the whole garden.

No rushing. No hurrying anyone along. That's the magic here.

A Garden Full of Flowers at Every Turn

Over 75,000 herbs and flowers planted throughout. The view changes completely with the seasons: rapeseed and tulips in spring, lavender and sage in summer, cosmos covering the hillside in autumn.

Lie in a Hammock and Just Stay

Midway through the garden, a row of wooden hammocks faces Kobe harbor. On a clear day, lie back, let a flower-scented breeze wash over you, and watch the distant sea go hazy.

This was one of the rare moments in my travels through Japan when I truly did nothing. No photos, no walking, just staying.

Essential Oils, Herbs, and Things You Can't Stop Buying

The garden has a large selection of herb-based essential oils, soaps, teas, and foods. If you like lavender products, the range here puts most department stores to shame. Both times I visited, I left with a bag full of things.
