5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at New Chitose Airport & Sapporo
New Chitose Airport (CTS) → Sapporo (JR Rapid Airport train, about 37 min, ¥1,230 (non-reserved, 2025-04 revision))
Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade: browse shops and drugstores
Susukino: dinner at Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley) — miso ramen (¥1,000–1,500) or soup curry (¥1,500–2,000)
Day 2: Day Trip to Otaru
Sapporo → Otaru (JR, about 35 min, ¥800, 2025-04 revision)
Otaru Canal: Hokkaido's most iconic scene; canal cruise available (day cruise ¥1,800 / night ¥2,000)
Sakaimachi Street: glasswork shops and the Otaru beer brewery
Lunch: Sankaku Market or an Otaru seafood rice bowl (kaisen-don) (¥2,500–4,000)
Head back to Sapporo in the afternoon and stroll Odori Park in the evening
Day 3: Day Trip to Furano & Biei (summer only, mid-July–early August)
⚠️ Furano's lavender is summer-only (peaks mid-July; harvest starts early August). Outside that window, swap in Biei's year-round scenery or Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, or skip this day entirely.
Sapporo → Furano (in summer, the reserved-seat Furano Lavender Express, about 2 hours each way; outside its running season, take the Ltd Express Kamui/Lilac to Asahikawa, then a Furano Line local train)
Farm Tomita: lavender fields, best around mid-July
Biei's rolling hills: patchwork farmland scenery (needs a rental car or the infrequent Twinkle Bus sightseeing service — save it for next time if you're short on time)
Head back to Sapporo in the evening (about 2 hours each way, roughly 4.5 hours round trip, so start early); overnight in Sapporo
Sapporo → Hakodate (Ltd Express Hokuto, about 3 hours 50 minutes, all seats reserved so book ahead — this is NOT a Shinkansen; the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass is valid)
Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse: a must-see spot along Hakodate's harbor
Mt. Hakodate night view: ranked among the world's three best night views (ropeway runs from 10:00; best about 30 minutes after sunset; ropeway ¥1,800, or a 40-minute hike)
Overnight in Hakodate
Day 5: Hakodate Morning Market & Departure
Hakodate Morning Market: start with a seafood rice bowl and king crab (¥3,000–8,000); the market opens at 05:00 (06:00 Jan–Apr) and winds down around 14:00, so go early
Hakodate → New Chitose Airport (Ltd Express Hokuto to Minami-Chitose, then transfer; about 3 hours 20 minutes). ⚠️ This day only works with an afternoon or evening flight — for a morning flight, move to Hakodate on Day 4 evening and do the market a day earlier, or drop Hakodate from the plan
Once at the airport, shop the arrival terminal: Shiroi Koibito cookies, Rokkatei's Marusei Butter Sandwiches (Hokkaido-exclusive)
