Okinawa Basics

Okinawa (the Ryukyu Islands) sits at Japan's southernmost tip, at roughly the same latitude as southern Taiwan, so it stays warm year-round.

  • Taiwan → Naha: about 1.5 hours (direct flights from Taoyuan, Taichung, and Kaohsiung)
  • Best time to visit: March–May (after Tomb-Sweeping season, before the rainy season) and September–November (after summer, once typhoon season has passed)
  • Language: Japanese (with the local Okinawan dialect and accent)

Why You Need to Rent a Car in Okinawa

Public transport in Okinawa is very limited, so renting a car is essential (or book a day tour that includes a vehicle):

  • Naha has a monorail (Yui Rail), but most attractions are outside the city
  • Buses run infrequently and the schedules are confusing
  • Car rental cost: ¥5,000-8,000/day (insurance included)

5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Naha, Shuri Castle, Kokusai Dori

  • Naha Airport → pick up rental car → hotel check-in
  • Shuri Castle (paid area ¥400; rises to ¥1,000 when the rebuilt main hall reopens on 23 Nov 2026, with the main-hall interior then by advance reservation): still being rebuilt after the 2019 fire, though the park and part of the paid area are open — the site of the former Ryukyu Kingdom (a UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Kokusai Dori: Naha's liveliest shopping street — souvenirs, awamori (Okinawan spirit), bitter melon (goya) products, and brown sugar treats

Day 2: The North — Churaumi Aquarium, Kouri Island

⚠️ Naha → Churaumi is about 2 hours each way (4–4.5 hours round trip), so to fit the aquarium, Kouri Island, and the Bise grove into one day, set off first thing; for a more relaxed pace, stay a night in Nago/Motobu and split it across two days. - Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (¥2,180; 8:30–18:30, last entry 17:30): the world's second-largest aquarium, home to whale sharks and manta rays. The March–May and September–November shoulder seasons we recommend keep normal hours with no extension, so don't linger in Naha until midday or you may arrive after the 17:30 last entry — only midsummer (July–Aug) and Golden Week stay open until 20:00–21:00 - Kouri Island (古宇利島): crystal-clear blue water and the heart-shaped Heart Rock (ハートロック) - Bise Fukugi Tree Grove (備瀬の福木並木): a mysterious little path winding through a grove of fukugi trees

Day 3: Central East Coast — Katsuren Castle Ruins, Kaichu Road, American Village Sunset

  • Katsuren Castle Ruins / Amawari Park (¥600; 9:00–18:00, open year-round; a UNESCO World Heritage Site): the ruins of a seaside castle once ruled by Amawari, the last lord of Katsuren
  • Kaichu Road (海中道路): a roughly 4.7-km causeway built out across the sea, ocean on both sides, running out to the islands off the Katsuren Peninsula
  • Glass Beach (Gushikawa, Uruma City): a beach scattered with beautifully colored sea glass; it sits on the central east coast (Uruma City) in the same cluster as Katsuren Castle and Kaichu Road, so it slots naturally into this day
  • American Village (アメリカンビレッジ): finish the day here on the west coast — a laid-back, American-style waterfront district with some of the best sunset views around

Day 4: The South — Peace Memorial Park, Shinzato Beach

  • Peace Memorial Park (平和祈念公園): a memorial site commemorating the Battle of Okinawa in WWII; the grounds are free (the Peace Memorial Museum charges about ¥300, 9:00–17:00)
  • Shinzato Beach (Nanjo City): a shallow coral-reef beach that's great for snorkeling, with glass-bottom boat rides too

Day 5: Shopping in Naha, Departure

  • DFS T Galleria Okinawa: duty-free luxury goods and cosmetics
  • Makishi Public Market (まちぐゎー): a traditional market — great for last-minute souvenirs
  • Head to the airport
