Japanese for Trains — Tickets, Directions & Boarding | Nihongo to Japan
Japan's railway network is one of the most complex — and most punctual — in the world. For first-time visitors, the dense route maps and Japanese announcements can be overwhelming. Master the train and station phrases below and getting around Tokyo, Osaka or any city becomes far smoother.
Directions & confirming the way
Where is ~ Station?

IC cards like Suica and ICOCA can be bought at most ticket machines and are handier than buying a ticket each time. Apple Pay and Google Pay also support Suica.

Since spring 2024, the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu shinkansen are entirely non-smoking (all onboard smoking rooms have been removed), so there's no need to ask for a non-smoking car.
When things go wrong
I got on the wrong train
(すいかがつかえません) — My Suica isn't working
I got stopped at the ticket gate
I left my luggage behind
If you take the wrong train, don't panic — tell a station attendant 「乗り間違えました」 and they'll help you sort it out. Japanese station staff are very patient.
Travel tips
- Download offline maps in Google Maps or NAVITIME Japan so you can check routes without signal
- Japanese trains run almost to the second — leave a few extra minutes in case you can't find the platform
- An IC card (Suica/ICOCA) is cheaper than buying tickets each time, and you can spend it at convenience stores
- Staying quiet on the train is basic etiquette; step to the area between cars to take a call
FAQ
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth buying?
If your trip spans several cities (e.g. Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima), the JR Pass usually pays off. If you're staying within one city like Tokyo or Osaka, topping up a Suica is more convenient. Use a JR Pass calculator to check your itinerary.
What's the difference between Suica and ICOCA?
They work almost identically and can be used on most trains, buses and at convenience stores across Japan. Suica is issued by JR East (Tokyo area), ICOCA by JR West (Osaka/Kyoto area). Both are now interoperable nationwide, so just get one.
What if I can't read the route map?
Japanese stations usually have English route maps, and you can navigate with Google Maps. The simplest approach is to ask a station attendant 「〜に行きたいのですが」 — they'll tell you which line to take and where to transfer.
Roughly what JLPT level is train Japanese?
Basic directions and buying tickets are around N5; understanding transfer explanations and announcements is roughly N4–N3. The N5 vocabulary in the Nihongo to Japan challenge zone includes many transport words — worth practicing before you go.
