The Three Japanese Verb Groups
- Godan (u-verbs): conjugate by the final kana, e.g. 書く→書いて, 読む→読んで.
- Ichidan (ru-verbs): drop る and attach, e.g. 食べる→食べて.
- Irregular: する→して/した/しない/できる; 来る→来て/来た/来ない/来られる.
Godan te-form / ta-form Sound Changes
- う・つ・る to って/った
- む・ぶ・ぬ to んで/んだ
- く to いて/いた (exception: 行く→行って)
- ぐ to いで/いだ
- す to して/した
Other Common Forms
- nai-form (negative): Godan final u-row to a-row + ない; Ichidan drop る + ない.
- potential form: Godan final u-row to e-row + る; Ichidan drop る + られる.
- i-adjectives: te-form →くて, past →かった, negative →くない (いい is irregular →よくて).
