「若さゆえのミス」「貧しさゆえに苦しんだ」 — the formal written ‘because of 〜.'
「我思う、ゆえに我あり」 — precisely because ~, therefore ~ (the written “because”)
「我思う、ゆえに我あり (I think, therefore I am)」 — the 「ゆえに」 in this famous philosophical line is the most formal, solemn “because.” 「〜ゆえに・〜ゆえの」 = precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore. It's a solemn causal expression in essays, philosophy, and formal writing; this guide sorts out 「ゆえに (therefore)」 from 「ゆえの (the ~ arising from ~)」 and distinguishes the colloquial 「から/ので.」
Core: precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore (a formal written cause)
「(noun/plain form) + ゆえに/ゆえ」 = precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore (a formal, written, solemn “because … (so) …”):
- 情報が不足していたゆえに、誤った判断をした (precisely because information was lacking, a wrong judgment was made).
- 経験が浅いがゆえに、思わぬ失敗をした (precisely because experience was shallow, an unexpected failure occurred).
Adnominal 「ゆえの」 = the ~ arising from ~:
- 若さゆえの過ち (a mistake born of youth).
Feel: 「ゆえ (故)」 is the literary “cause, reason,” and 「Aゆえに」 = “precisely because A, owing to A (so) ~.” It's a formal, written, solemn causal expression with an essayistic, philosophical color, mostly for papers, commentary, formal writing, aphorisms. After a noun, 「が」 is sometimes added → 「がゆえに」 (more literary, more emphatic). To modify a noun, use 「ゆえの」 (若さゆえのミス = a slip born of youth). In English: precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore. (For the everyday “because,” use 〈から〉〈ので〉 — see below.)

See it in context
- 完璧を求めるがゆえに、かえって前に進めなくなる。(Precisely because one seeks perfection, one becomes unable to move forward.)
- 彼は正直であるがゆえに、損をすることもある。(Precisely because he is honest, he sometimes loses out.)
- それは無知ゆえの偏見にすぎない。(That is merely prejudice born of ignorance.)
- 期待が大きかったゆえに、失望も大きかった。(Precisely because the hopes were great, the disappointment was great too.)
- 前提が誤っている。ゆえに、結論も誤りである。(The premise is wrong. Therefore, the conclusion is wrong too.)
⚠️ Easy traps to avoid
① It's a formal, written, solemn “because”; not used in everyday speech. 「ゆえに」 is a very formal, written, solemn causal expression with an essayistic, philosophical, aphoristic color, mostly for papers, commentary, formal writing, law, academia. Everyday speech almost never uses it — for a reason among friends, use 「から/ので,」 never 「お腹が空いたゆえに、ご飯を食べる」 (that sounds like reciting a philosophy paper, comical). Test: to state cause formally, in writing, solemnly (essays, academia) → ゆえに; for everyday reasons → から/ので.
② 「ゆえに」 (therefore, adverb) and 「ゆえの」 (the ~ arising from ~, adnominal) have different roles. These two forms play different roles — don't confuse them. 「ゆえに」 is an adverb (= therefore, so), placed after a cause to draw a conclusion, or sentence-initially to follow on: 前提が誤り。ゆえに、結論も誤り (the premise is wrong. Therefore the conclusion is too). 「ゆえの」 is adnominal (= the ~ arising from ~), followed by a noun, for “the (noun) that arises from ~”: 若さゆえの過ち (a fault born of youth), 無知ゆえの偏見 (prejudice born of ignorance). Difference: 「ゆえに」 + (a conclusion clause) = therefore ~; 「ゆえの」 + noun = the (thing) born of ~. Test: a clause follows, drawing a conclusion → ゆえに; a noun follows → ゆえの.
③ After a noun, 「が」 is often added → 「がゆえに,」 more literary and emphatic. When 「ゆえに」 follows a noun, 「が」 is often inserted between the noun and 「ゆえに」 → 「(noun) がゆえに,」 and this 「が」 makes the tone more literary, more emphatic of the cause: 正直であるがゆえに (precisely because honest), 若さがゆえに (precisely because of youth), 真剣であるがゆえに (precisely because earnest). With or without 「が」 the meaning is the same, but 「がゆえに」 is more written, more solemn, more emphatic. Test: for more literary, more emphatic cause → 「がゆえに」; for general writing → 「ゆえに」 is also fine. This 「が」 is a classical usage, not the subject-marker — don't misread it.
④ The difference from 「から/ので」 — purely register. All three express “because”; the core difference is the degree of formality, solemnity. 「ゆえに」 = the most formal, written, solemn (essays, philosophy, academia, aphorisms), with archaic, solemn weight. 「ので」 = neutral, somewhat formal, usable in writing and speech, polite, indirect. 「から」 = the most colloquial, subjective, most common in everyday conversation, can carry assertion, reason. Difference: ゆえに (formal, written, solemn) > ので (neutral, somewhat formal) > から (colloquial, subjective). Test: papers, commentary, formal writing, wanting solemnity → ゆえに; general politeness, writing and speech alike → ので; everyday conversation, giving one's own reason → から. So the philosophical proposition “I think therefore I am” uses 「ゆえに,」 while everyday “I'll rest because I'm tired” uses 「疲れたから休む.」
🔄 Compare with similar forms: ゆえに/から・ので/につき/ことから
| Form | Meaning | Register・emphasis | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ゆえに/ゆえの | precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore | most formal, written, solemn (essays, philosophy) | 若さゆえに |
| から・ので | because ~ | colloquial~neutral (everyday, general) | 疲れたから |
| につき | owing to ~, due to ~ | administrative, notices (formal signage) | 工事中につき |
| ことから | from ~ (this point), because ~ | inferring from some fact | このことから |
💡 The one thing to remember
「〜ゆえに」 is the most formal, solemn “because” — 「我思う、ゆえに我あり」「若さゆえの過ち」 carry the weight of essays, philosophy, and aphorisms the moment they appear. It belongs to papers, commentary, formal writing, academia, and everyday speech never uses it (use から/ので). Three points: ① 「ゆえに」 = therefore (adverb, before a conclusion); 「ゆえの」 = the ~ born of ~ (adnominal, before a noun) — don't confuse their roles; ② after a noun, 「が」 is often added → 「がゆえに,」 more literary and emphatic (正直であるがゆえに); ③ by register, ゆえに (solemn, written) > ので (neutral) > から (colloquial). To write like an essay, with weight, 「ゆえに」 fits best; for everyday chat, stick to 「から/ので.」
❓ Common questions
Q: 「ゆえに」 and 「から/ので」 are all “because” — where's the difference?
The core difference is ‘the degree of formality, solemnity,' the meanings overlapping but the settings worlds apart. 「ゆえに」 = precisely because ~, owing to ~, therefore (most formal, written, solemn): with an essayistic, philosophical, aphoristic, academic color, a very formal, solemn causal expression, mostly for papers, commentary, law, formal writing: 前提が誤っているゆえに、結論も誤りである (precisely because the premise is wrong, the conclusion is too — essayistic tone), 我思うゆえに我あり (I think therefore I am — a philosophical proposition). It gives an archaic, solemn, weighty impression, comical in everyday conversation. 「から/ので」 = because ~ (colloquial~neutral, everyday, general): 「から」 is the most colloquial, subjective (疲れたから休む = rest because tired), 「ので」 neutral, somewhat polite (雨なので中止します = cancel because of rain), both everyday, general causal expressions. In one line: 「ゆえに」 is the solemn “because” of essays and philosophy; 「から/ので」 is the everyday, general “because.” Test: writing a paper, commentary, wanting solemnity, weight → ゆえに (written); everyday conversation, general writing → から (colloquial)/ので (neutral). So a famous philosophical line uses 「ゆえに,」 while everyday “because I'm hungry” uses 「お腹が空いたから」 — never 「ゆえに.」
Q: What's the difference between 「若さゆえのミス」 and 「若さゆえにミスをした」?
The difference is ‘ゆえの (adnominal, before a noun) vs. ゆえに (adverb, before a clause)' — different form and role, though both express “(a slip) ~ from youth.” 「若さゆえのミス」 = a slip born of youth (ゆえの + noun): 「ゆえの」 is adnominal modification, followed by a noun, taking the whole “born of ~” as a modifier of the following noun — 「若さゆえのミス」 = “the ‘slip' that arises from youth” (ミス is a noun, modified by 「若さゆえの」). It's a noun phrase (a slip born of youth), usable as a subject or object: 若さゆえの過ちは、誰にでもある (a fault born of youth, everyone has one). 「若さゆえにミスをした」 = made a slip because of youth (ゆえに + clause): 「ゆえに」 is an adverb, followed by a clause, drawing out the “(so) ~” result — 「若さゆえに、ミスをした」 = “precisely because of youth, (so) made a slip” (followed by the clause 「ミスをした」). It's a complete causal sentence. Difference: 「ゆえの」 + noun = the (noun) born of ~ (a noun phrase); 「ゆえに」 + clause = precisely because ~, (so) ~ (a causal sentence). Test: a noun follows (to modify it) → ゆえの; a clause follows (to draw a result) → ゆえに. So “a slip born of youth” (a noun) uses 「若さゆえのミス,」 “made a slip because of youth” (a clause) uses 「若さゆえにミスをした.」
