Adverbs for rough estimates — “about two hours,” “more or less” — plus およそ…nai (“not at all”), with examples. (JLPT N1)
「およそ2時間」「大体わかった」 — about, roughly, at a glance
For estimating quantity and degree, Japanese has a set of imprecise adverbs — 「駅まではおよそ2時間かかる (it takes about 2 hours to the station)」「説明を聞いて、大体わかった (hearing the explanation, I roughly understood).」 「およそ/大体/ざっと」 = about, roughly, at a glance. This guide clarifies the three's split, and specially notes that 「およそ」 has a special use: 「およそ〜ない = not at all, utterly not,” finally separating it from the pre-number 「約.」
Core: estimating about, roughly, at a glance
All three express an imprecise estimate, but differ in emphasis:
①「およそ」 = about, approximately (estimating quantity, more written):
- 会場にはおよそ千人が集まった (about a thousand people gathered at the venue).
②「大体(だいたい)」 = roughly, more or less (an approximation of degree, colloquial and general):
③「ざっと」 = roughly, at a glance (doing something quickly, imprecisely):
- 資料にざっと目を通す (skim through the materials at a glance).
- 費用はざっと見積もっても百万円だ (even a rough estimate puts the cost at a million yen).
⚠️Plus a special use: 「およそ〜ない」 = not at all, utterly not:
- そんな話は、およそ現実的でない (such a story is not at all realistic).
Feel: およそ = about (estimating numbers, written); 大体 = roughly (degree, colloquial); ざっと = roughly, quickly (doing something). In English: about, roughly, at a glance, approximately.
Attachment rules
| Adverb | Meaning | Emphasis | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| およそ | about/(〜ない) not at all | estimating numbers (written)/utter negation | およそ千人 |
| 大体 | roughly, more or less | an approximation of degree (colloquial) | 大体わかった (got the gist of it) |
| ざっと | roughly, at a glance | doing quickly, imprecisely | ざっと目を通す |
| およそ〜ない | not at all, utterly not | stressing total negation | およそ意味がない (has no meaning whatsoever) |
Examples in context
- この工事には、およそ三年かかる見込みだ。(This construction is expected to take about three years.)
- 彼の言いたいことは、大体わかる。(I roughly get what he wants to say.)
- 時間がないので、ざっと説明します。(As there's no time, I'll explain roughly.)
- ざっと見ただけでも、百点はある。(Even at a glance, there are a hundred items.)
- そんな夢物語は、およそ実現性がない。(Such a pipe dream has no chance of realization at all.) — およそ〜ない
⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid
① ⭐「およそ」 has two meanings: ① about (estimating) ② (およそ〜ない) not at all, utterly. This is the most easily missed point. Besides “about,” 「およそ」 before a negative also means “utterly, at all.” ①「およそ」 = about, approximately (estimating quantity): およそ2時間 (about 2 hours), およそ千人 (about a thousand). ②「およそ〜ない」 = not at all, utterly not (stressing total negation): この計画はおよそ現実的でない (this plan is not at all realistic), 彼の態度はおよそ社会人らしくない (his attitude is nothing like a working adult's at all), およそ意味がない (utterly meaningless). This use ② 「およそ」 = 「まったく、到底」 (utterly, at all), before a negative, stressing “not at all, no ~ whatsoever.” Test: 「およそ + quantity」 → ① about (およそ2時間); 「およそ + negative」 → ② not at all, utterly (およそ意味がない). On seeing 「およそ〜ない,」 don't read it as “about not,” it's “not at all.”
② およそ (estimating numbers, written)/大体 (degree, colloquial)/ざっと (rough action) — the split. All three are “imprecise,” but differ in emphasis, register. 「およそ」 = about (estimating quantity, more written, formal): およそ千人 (about a thousand — estimating a number, written). 「大体」 = roughly (an approximation of degree, colloquial and general): 大体わかった (roughly understood — an approximation of degree, colloquial), 大体終わった (roughly finished). It mostly expresses “an approximation of degree,” common in speech. 「ざっと」 = roughly, at a glance (doing some action quickly, imprecisely): ざっと目を通す (skim), ざっと計算する (calculate roughly) — “doing some action quickly, roughly,” mostly with a verb. Difference: 「およそ」 leans estimating quantity (written); 「大体」 leans an approximation of degree (colloquial); 「ざっと」 leans doing some action roughly, quickly. Test: estimating a quantity (written) → およそ; an approximation of degree (colloquial) → 大体; doing (skimming/calculating) roughly, quickly → ざっと.
③ Separate it from the pre-number 「約」 — 約 = approximately (before a number only, most formal). Here's a common addition. 「約(やく)」 = approximately ~ (placed before a number, most formal, written): 約2時間 (approx. 2 hours), 約千人 (approx. a thousand), 約3割 (approx. 30%). It's a formal estimating word placed before a number, common in notices, reports. 「およそ」 and 「約」 are close (both “about”), but 「約」 goes only before a number, is more concise and formal, while 「およそ」 is a bit more colloquial and can also do 「およそ〜ない (not at all).」 Test: a formal estimate before a number → 約 (約2時間); a general estimate or “not at all” → およそ. The three to remember: 約 = before a number (most formal), およそ = about (written, + not-at-all), 大体 = roughly (colloquial), ざっと = a rough action.
🔄 Compare: およそ/大体/ざっと/約
| Adverb | Meaning | Emphasis | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| およそ | about/(〜ない) not at all | estimating quantity (written)/total negation | およそ千人 |
| 大体 | roughly, more or less | an approximation of degree (colloquial) | 大体わかった (got the gist of it) |
| ざっと | roughly, at a glance | doing quickly, imprecisely | ざっと目を通す |
| 約 | approximately ~ | before a number (most formal) | 約2時間 |
💡 Quick takeaway
「およそ/大体/ざっと」 = about, roughly, at a glance — three points: ①⭐「およそ」 has two meanings — ① about (およそ2時間), ② (およそ〜ない) not at all, utterly (およそ意味がない); ② the three's split — およそ = estimating numbers (written), 大体 = an approximation of degree (colloquial), ざっと = doing some action roughly, quickly (skimming/calculating); ③ separate it from the pre-number 「約」 — 約 is most formal, before a number only. This set of estimating adverbs is super handy — for “about how much” use 「およそ/約,」 for “roughly understood” use 「大体,」 for “take a quick look” use 「ざっと.」 Most tested is 「およそ」's hidden use: on seeing 「およそ〜ない,」 don't think “about not” — it's “not at all, utterly not” (およそ考えられない = utterly unthinkable).
❓ Questions you might have
Q: Does 「およそ意味がない」 mean ‘about meaningless'?
No — it means ‘utterly meaningless, not meaningful at all.' This is 「およそ」's most easily misread hidden use. Besides “about” (estimating), before a negative 「およそ」 means “utterly, at all, in the least,” stressing total negation: 「およそ意味がない」 = “utterly meaningless” (not “about meaningless”), 「およそ現実的でない」 = “not at all realistic,” 「およそ考えられない」 = “utterly unthinkable,” 「彼の行動はおよそ理解できない」 = “his behavior is completely incomprehensible.” This use's 「およそ」 = 「まったく (utterly), 到底 (at all),” entirely different from the estimating “about.” Its logic: 「およそ」 originally means “in general, on the whole,” extended into a negative sentence to become “on the whole (utterly) not ~ = not at all.” Test: 「およそ + quantity」 = about (およそ2時間 = about 2 hours); 「およそ + negative (〜ない)」 = not at all, utterly (およそ意味がない = utterly meaningless). On seeing 「およそ〜ない,」 always read it as “not at all, utterly not,” not “about not.”
Q: What's the difference between 「大体」 and 「ざっと」? Both ‘roughly'?
The difference is ‘an approximation of degree' vs ‘doing some action roughly, quickly.' 「大体(だいたい)」 = roughly, more or less (an approximation of degree, colloquial and general): it means “an approximation of degree, general direction,” stressing “roughly, pretty much,” mostly for understanding, completion, state: 話は大体わかった (roughly understood the talk — an approximation of understanding degree), 準備は大体終わった (preparations are roughly done — degree of completion), 大体そんなところだ (roughly that's it). It's “roughly” of degree, state, very common in speech. 「ざっと」 = roughly, at a glance (doing some action quickly, imprecisely): it means “doing some action quickly, roughly,” stressing “not carefully, quickly skimming,” mostly with a verb (look, calculate, explain): 資料にざっと目を通す (skim through the materials — looking quickly, roughly), ざっと計算する (calculate roughly), ざっと説明する (explain roughly). It's “rough, quick” of an action. Difference: 「大体」 = an approximation of degree, state (roughly understood/done, colloquial); 「ざっと」 = doing some action roughly, quickly (skim/calculate, mostly with a verb). Test: to say “(degree of understanding, completion) roughly ~” → 大体 (大体わかった); to say “(quickly, roughly) do some action” → ざっと (ざっと目を通す). So “roughly understand” uses 「大体わかった,」 “skim through” uses 「ざっと目を通す.」
