N2 Grammar Essentials: 24 high-frequency patterns at a glance (+ N2/N3 differences)

Want to grasp the core of JLPT N2 grammar fast? This list gathers the 24 most-tested, most-useful N2 patterns at once — each with a one-line feel + an example — plus an N2/N3 difference table. N2 is the watershed “from speaking to writing”: N3 handles daily conversation, N2 lets you read Japanese news and written texts and express complex ideas at work. 〜ものの (although … yet)

There's a gap or regret between clauses; more written/formal than けど:

〜とはいえ (that said)

Admits the first clause as fact, but adds a reservation:

〜にもかかわらず (despite …)

Strong contrast — A is ignored, yet B happens anyway:

〜ないことには (unless you …, you can't …)

A is a necessary precondition for B:

〜ものなら (if only one could …)

Expresses a nearly impossible wish:

〜からこそ (precisely because …)

Stresses that this very reason led to this result:

〜に加えて (in addition to)

〜をはじめ (starting with / led by)

〜に関して (regarding — formal)

A more formal ‘regarding' than について:

〜つつある (gradually becoming …)

Describes a social phenomenon or long-term trend, mostly written:

〜の末に (after …, finally)

After long effort, finally reaching a result:

〜に過ぎない (no more than …)

Carries a ‘not worth mentioning' nuance:

〜に反して (contrary to …)

〜にとって (for / to …)

〜こそ (this very …)

〜さえ〜ば (as long as just …)

〜を通じて (through / via)

💡 Learning tip

Don't memorize these 24 patterns “front to back” — that's the least efficient way. Three tips: ① first skim the feels and circle the ones you ‘don't get / aren't sure of' (e.g., 〜ものの vs 〜とはいえ, 〜からこそ vs 〜だけに), and dig deep only into those; ② distinguish in groups, don't learn in isolation — the N2 exam loves “pick one of two near-synonyms” (each pattern here has its own page with a 🔄 comparison; clicking through is the fastest way to see the differences); ③ use it right after reading: pick 3 and make your own sentences (tied to your work/life) — worth more than reading the examples ten times. This list is the “map”; the real practice is “putting each pattern into your own words.” In the week before the exam, sweeping your weak spots with this is enough.
