Mistake 1: reading 1日 as いちにち

The numbers themselves are easy; the irregular readings are the hard part — dates especially. Don't cram them all at once: nail the 1st–10th and 20th (ついたち・ふつか・みっか…はつか), the most irregular and most used, then add 「にち」 by rule for the rest. Learn the clock oddballs too — よじ (4:00), しちじ (7:00), くじ (9:00). Get those and dates/times stop tripping you.
