“〜hoka ni・hoka ni wa”: Besides / In Addition / Other Than
「noun ＋ のほかに」/「verb dictionary form ＋ ほかに」 means “besides 〜, (also) 〜” — “in addition, other than.” E.g. 「水のほかに、お茶もある」 (besides water, there's tea too). Adding は makes ほかには, often followed by a negative, meaning “other than this, there's (nothing)”: 「彼のほかには誰も知らない」 (other than him, no one knows).
