JLPT N4 core vocabulary: a theme-based word map on one page (selection)
N4 is a major Japanese milestone — the leap from “stringing words together” to full sentences and reading short passages. Textbooks commonly estimate the N4 study range at about 1,500 core words (The JLPT does not publish an official vocabulary, kanji, or grammar list for the current test; these figures are estimates drawn from widely used textbooks and prep material.) This page is not that full list — it organizes high-frequency N4 vocabulary by theme (emotion/state, action/motion, na-adjectives, conjunctions/adverbs, nouns, time/frequency), each with reading, meaning, and an example, and flags the most easily confused pairs. Great as a wordbook, a pre-exam quick-reference, or for filling gaps.

💡 How to remember this
To learn 1,500 words, don't go “あ to ん” — that's the fastest way to quit. Use this page's theme grouping: attack one theme at a time (nail “emotion/state adjectives” first, then “action verbs”), and related words reinforce each other. Three tips: ① always learn with the example (knowing how to use it makes it stick); ② learn by ear (use audio — read and listen together, training listening too); ③ review yesterday's daily (spaced repetition beats one cram tenfold). Make this page your N4 vocabulary map and take it one block at a time.
❓ Common questions
Q: What's the most effective way to learn 1,500 N4 words?
Don't grind in kana order — use “theme grouping + examples + spaced review.” Attack one theme at a time (emotion, action, time…); related words reinforce each other. Learn each with an example (context makes it stick); spend a few minutes daily reviewing yesterday's (spaced repetition is the key to memory). Pair with audio to learn by ear and improve listening too.
Q: Vocabulary or grammar first?
Both together, but vocabulary is the foundation. Grammar is the “skeleton,” vocabulary the “flesh” — without enough words, even solid grammar can't produce or comprehend. Suggestion: get the N5+N4 core (~2,000 words) to instant recognition while drilling grammar patterns. With enough words, reading and listening keep up. These 1,500 are your N4 vocabulary core.
