N5 Grammar Summary: The 15 Most Important Patterns
Do you remember the first time you said a full sentence in Japanese and thought, "Wait, I can actually do this"? That feeling is exactly where N5 is meant to take you. The 15 core patterns here aren't meant to be memorized cold — they're building blocks that stack: first you say who you are and what things are, then likes, time, and actions, until one day you're stringing your own thoughts together. Don't rush toward the hard stuff; drill these 15 until they come out without thinking, and passing N5 is far closer than it feels.
JLPT N5 is the starting point of learning Japanese, covering the most basic sentence patterns, particles, and tenses. Here are the 15 most core N5 grammar points, each with examples and when to use them.
1. 〜は〜です / 〜ではありません
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| affirmative | これは本です。(This is a book.) |
| negative | これは本ではありません。(This isn't a book.) |
| question | これは本ですか?(Is this a book?) |
2. The particle は (topic marker)
は marks the sentence topic:
- 私は学生です。(I'm a student.)
- これは何ですか?(What is this?)
💡 は as a particle is pronounced ‘wa,' not ‘ha.'
3. The particle が (subject/emphasis)
が marks the subject, stressing ‘who/what' did the action:
4. The particle を (object)
を marks a verb's object:
5. The particle に (time/direction/location)
に has many uses; remember three core ones:
- time: 3時に起きます。(get up at 3)
- direction: 東京に行きます。(go to Tokyo)
- existence location: 公園にいます。(be at the park)
6. The particle で (means/place)
💡 に vs で: に = location of existence (います/あります); で = place where an action happens (食べます/勉強します).
7. います vs あります
| Verb | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| います | living things (people/animals) | 猫が部屋にいます。 (There's a cat in the room.) |
| あります | non-living (objects/events) | 本がテーブルにあります。 (There's a book on the table.) |
8. The 〜ます form (polite verbs)
| Plain | ます-form | negative | past | past negative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 食べる | 食べます | 食べません | 食べました | 食べませんでした |
| 飲む | 飲みます | 飲みません | 飲みました | 飲みませんでした |
| する | します | しません | しました | しませんでした |
9. 〜ている (progressive/state)
- action in progress: 今、ご飯を食べています。(eating now)
- lasting state: 彼は結婚しています。(he is married)
- habit: 毎日、運動しています。(exercise every day)
10. 〜てください (request)
verb te-form + ください = please do …:
- 座ってください。(Please sit.)
- 名前を書いてください。(Please write your name.)
11. 〜たい (want to do)
verb stem + たい = I want to do …:
- 日本に行きたいです。(I want to go to Japan.)
- 寿司を食べたいです。(I want to eat sushi.)
💡 たい conjugates: たいです・たくない・たかった・たくなかった.
12. 〜ましょう (let's do)
verb stem + ましょう = let's do …:
- 一緒に行きましょう。(Let's go together.)
- 休みましょう。(Let's take a break.)
13. The 〜ない form (negative)
- 食べない (don't eat) / 食べません (polite)
- 〜なくてもいいです: 食べなくてもいいです。(don't have to eat)
- 〜ないでください: 見ないでください。(please don't look)
14. 〜から (because) / 〜が (but)
から (because): 眠いから、早く寝ます。(I'm sleepy, so I'll sleep early.)
が (but/adversative): 日本語が好きですが、難しいですね。(I like Japanese, but it's hard.)
15. Question Words
| Question word | Meaning | Example |

| いつ | when | いつ来ますか? (When are you coming?) |
| どれ | which one | どれがあなたのですか? (Which one is yours?) |
| いくら | how much (price) | これはいくらですか? (How much is this?) |
| どうして / なぜ | why | どうして遅れましたか? (Why were you late?) |
💡 The key point in use
These 15 aren't for “understanding” — they're for saying out loud. Rather than skimming each and assuming you've got it, drill 3–5 to reflex first: the five particles は・が・を・に・で, plus the ます-form and ています, already build most of your everyday sentences. Come back for the rest as you need them. At N5, what matters isn't how many you've seen, but how many you can say without thinking.
❓ Questions you might have
Q: How long do these 15 N5 points take?
With full-time study (3–4 hours/day), reaching N5 level takes roughly 1–3 months for many learners. But “recognizing” and “being able to say it” are different — speaking and building your own sentences beats re-reading.
Q: I keep mixing up particles.
Don't try to master them all at once. Lock in the most-missed pair first: 「に」 = existence/arrival (います・行く), 「で」 = where an action happens (食べます・勉強します). Nail that pair and particles are already half-solid.
