Question words for degree and quantity
「空港までどのくらいかかりますか」 — asking not ‘what time,' but ‘how long/how much'
「ここから空港まで、どのくらいかかりますか」 (from here to the airport, how long does it take?) — 「どのくらい/どれくらい」「どれほど」 are question words asking about degree, quantity, time, distance, cost: “how much, how long, how ~.” 「どのくらい」 is neutral and all-purpose; 「どれほど」 is more written, stronger, and can also turn into an exclamation (how … !). This guide covers their uses and difference, and how they connect with 「いくら」 and the exclamatory 「ことか」 (N2).
Core: asking about ‘degree/quantity' — how much, how long, how ~
「どのくらい/どれくらい/どれほど」 ask about degree, quantity (not “what” or “where,” but “to what degree, how much”):
- 駅までどのくらいかかりますか (how long to the station?) — asking time.
- この計画に、どれほどの費用がかかるのか (how much cost will this plan take?) — asking quantity (written).
Feel: “how much/how long/how ~” — the core is “asking the size of ‘quantity, degree.'” 「どのくらい」 is most neutral, all-purpose (time, distance, cost, degree); 「どれほど」 is more written, stronger, and besides a question can pair with 「〜ことか/〜だろう」 as an exclamation (どれほど〜ことか = how … !).
Uses & forms
| Form | Feel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| どのくらい/どれくらい | how much, how long (neutral, all-purpose) | どのくらいかかる? (How long does it take?) |
| どれほど | how ~ (written, strong) | どれほど大変か |
| どれほど〜ことか | exclamation (how … !) | どれほど嬉しいことか |
| どのくらいの + noun | how much ~ | どのくらいの時間 |
Examples in context
- このパソコンは、どれくらいしましたか。(How much did this computer cost?) — asking cost
- 完成まで、あとどのくらいかかりますか。(How much longer to completion?) — asking time
- 富士山の高さはどのくらいですか。(How tall is Mt. Fuji?) — asking degree
- 君に会えて、どれほどうれしいことか。(Getting to meet you, how happy I am!) — exclamation
- どれほど努力しても、報われないこともある。(No matter how hard you try, sometimes it's not rewarded.) — どれほど〜ても
⚠️ Easy traps to avoid
① 「どのくらい」 is neutral and all-purpose; 「どれほど」 is more written and stronger. Both ask about “degree/quantity,” differing in register. 「どのくらい/どれくらい」 = how much, how long (neutral, colloquial~general, for time/distance/cost/degree) (どのくらいかかる? = how long/much does it take?); 「どれほど」 = how ~ (more written, stronger, with an emphatic or exclamatory feel) (どれほどの努力が必要か = how much effort is needed?). For everyday “how long/much” use どのくらい; for written, stressing a large degree, use どれほど.
② 「どれほど」 can turn into an ‘exclamation' (how … !); どのくらい rarely. Besides a question, 「どれほど」 very often pairs with 「〜ことか/〜だろう」 for a strong exclamation (how … !): どれほど心配したことか (how worried I was!); どれほど嬉しかっただろう (how happy [they] must have been!). This is 「どれほど」's specialty (see 〈ことか〉). 「どのくらい」 is mainly for questions (asking quantity), rarely for exclamation. To exclaim “how … !” use 「どれほど〜ことか」.
③ For ‘quantity/cost,' there's a division of labor with 「いくら」. For a specific amount of money, 「いくら」 is more direct (このバッグはいくらですか = how much is this bag?); 「どのくらい」 can ask cost too, but is more often for time, distance, degree — “extent” (どのくらいかかる = how long/much does it take? — time or cost). For a plain “how much money” use いくら; for “how long, how much (extent, degree)” use どのくらい.
🔄 Compare: どのくらい/どれほど/いくら/どれだけ
| Form | Feel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| どのくらい/どれくらい | how much, how long (neutral, extent/degree) | どのくらいかかる (how long it takes) |
| どれほど | how ~ (written, strong, can exclaim) | どれほど〜ことか |
| いくら | how much (money) / no matter how ~ | これいくら? (How much is this?) |
| どれだけ | how much, how ~ (close to どれほど, can exclaim) | どれだけ待ったか |
💡 The key point in use
「どのくらい/どれくらい」「どれほど」 are question words asking about degree, quantity (how much, how long, how ~). Three points: ① 「どのくらい」 is neutral, all-purpose — for time, distance, cost, degree, the everyday go-to (空港までどのくらい?); ② 「どれほど」 is more written, stronger, and can pair with 「〜ことか/〜だろう」 to become an exclamation (どれほど〜ことか = how … !; see 〈ことか〉); ③ for a specific amount of money use 「いくら」, for “extent/degree” use どのくらい. Grasp “どのくらい = neutral quantity-asking, どれほど = written emphasis + can exclaim” and this set is clear. To naturally ask “how long/much,” どのくらい is the handiest.
❓ Questions you might have
Q: 「どのくらい」 and 「どれほど」 both ask about ‘degree' — when do I use which?
By register and use. 「どのくらい/どれくらい」 = how much, how long (neutral, colloquial~general, most used to ‘ask' time, distance, cost, degree, quantity): ここから駅までどのくらいかかりますか (how long to the station?); どのくらいの予算が必要ですか (how much budget is needed?); どれくらい日本語ができますか (how well can you speak Japanese?). It's the most natural everyday way to ‘ask quantity/degree,' for any extent. 「どれほど」 = how ~ (more written, stronger, besides a question more often carrying ‘emphasis' or turning into an ‘exclamation'): as a question, weightier — どれほどの犠牲を払ったことか (how much sacrifice was paid); as an exclamation with 「〜ことか/〜だろう」 — あなたに会えて、どれほど嬉しいことか (getting to meet you, how happy I am!). It's stronger, more literary; for a plain everyday “how long,” どれほど is rare (too written). Test: everyday plain “how long/much” → どのくらい; written, stressing a large degree, or exclaiming “how … !” → どれほど (+ ことか). So in chat, ask “how long?” with 「どのくらいかかる?」; in writing, exclaim “how hard it was” with 「どれほど大変だったことか」.
Q: 「どのくらい」 and 「いくら」 both can ask ‘how much' — what's the difference?
By the ‘object' asked about. 「いくら」 = how much money (mainly a ‘specific amount/price'), or ‘no matter how ~': ① asking an amount — このシャツはいくらですか (how much is this shirt?); 全部でいくらになりますか (how much all together?); ② いくら〜ても = no matter how ~ (いくら努力しても = no matter how hard I try; see 〈ても〉). For “how much money,” 「いくら」 is most direct and common. 「どのくらい/どれくらい」 = how much, how long (asking ‘time, distance, degree, quantity, cost' — ‘extent,' a broader range than いくら): どのくらいかかりますか (how long/much does it take? — time or cost); どのくらいの大きさですか (how big? — degree); あとどのくらいありますか (how much is left? — quantity). It asks about “extent, degree,” not limited to money. Test: a plain ‘amount, price' → いくら (most direct); ‘time, distance, degree, size' extent → どのくらい. Sometimes both work for cost (いくらかかる/どのくらいかかる), but いくら focuses on money, どのくらい is broader (incl. time, degree). Also, 「いくら〜ても (no matter how ~)」 is a concessive use unique to いくら; 「どのくらい」 lacks it.
