“〜ikani・〜ikani〜ka”: How (much) 〜 (written-style degree question/exclamation) [JLPT N2]
Content by NTJ Kuma · Nihongo to Japan editorial team · Updated July 27, 2026
「努力がいかに大切か」「いかに急いでも」 — the written “how much…” and “no matter how….”
「この経験が、いかに大切かを学んだ」 — the written ‘how/how much'
「留学して、日本語を話せることがいかに重要かを実感した」 (studying abroad, I keenly felt how important being able to speak Japanese is) — 「いかに/いかに〜か」 is the written, literary “how ~, how much ~”: = colloquial 「どんなに・どれほど」, but more formal, more expository. It expresses degree (how much …), method (how …), and can also become an exclamation. This guide covers 「いかに」's uses and attachment, separating it from the colloquial 「どれほど・どんなに」 (N2).
Core: how ~, how much ~ (= the written version of どんなに/どれほど)
「いかに」 is a written, dignified question/exclamation adverb, with main uses:
- ① いかに〜か = how much ~ (degree, = どんなに, often with 「か」): この技術がいかに難しいか、やってみて分かった (I understood how hard this technique is only by trying).
- ② いかに〜ても = no matter how ~, however much ~ (= どんなに〜ても): いかに努力しても、限界はある (however hard you try, there are limits).
- ③ いかにして = how (by what means): いかにしてこの問題を解決するか (how to solve this problem).
Feel: “how much …/how …” — the core is “formally, in writing, asking/lamenting ‘degree' or ‘method,'” = colloquial 「どんなに・どれほど」, but at a higher register, seen mostly in exposition, speeches, writing.
Uses & forms
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| いかに〜か | how much ~ (degree, with か) | いかに大切か |
| いかに〜ても | no matter how ~, however much | いかに〜ても |
| いかにして | how (method) | いかにして〜か |
| いかに(も) | indeed, truly (another word) | いかにも〜らしい |
See it in context
- 平和がいかに尊いかを、戦争は教えてくれる。(War teaches us how precious peace is.)
- いかに優れた計画でも、実行しなければ意味がない。(However excellent a plan, without execution it's meaningless.)
- いかにして信頼を築くかが、成功の鍵だ。(How to build trust is the key to success.)
- この数字は、状況がいかに深刻かを物語っている。(These figures tell how serious the situation is.)
- 健康の大切さは、失って初めて、いかにありがたいか分かる。(You realize how precious health is only after losing it.)
⚠️ Where learners slip up
① 「いかに」 is the written version of 「どんなに・どれほど」. The three are close (how ~), differing in register. どんなに/どれほど = colloquial~general (どんなに大変か = how hard; see 〈どれほど〉); いかに = written, literary, dignified (いかに大変か — an expository, speech feel). For “how ~” in expository writing, speeches, formal texts use いかに; in daily speech use どんなに/どれほど. Using 「いかに」 for daily trifles sounds too bookish.
② 「いかに〜か」 marks degree, often closing with 「〜かがわかる/〜かを示す」. After 「いかに〜か」 (how much …) often comes “〜かがわかる (you understand how …)・〜かを物語る (tells how …)・〜かを痛感する (keenly feel how …)”: この事故は、安全がいかに大切かを教えてくれた (this accident taught us how important safety is). It's often used in the expository structure “(through something) realize/understand ‘how ….'” Don't drop the 「か」 (いかに〜か's か is key).
③ 「いかに〜ても」 = however ~ (concession) — don't confuse it with 「いかに〜か」 (degree). いかに〜ても = no matter how ~, however much ~ (= どんなに〜ても, concession) (いかに急いでも間に合わない = however much you hurry, you won't make it); いかに〜か = how much ~ (degree/exclamation) (いかに難しいか = how hard). Check whether the ending is 「ても」 or 「か」: with 「ても」 = concession (however … still); with 「か」 = degree (how …). Also 「いかにも」 (= indeed, truly) is a wholly different word — don't confuse it with 「いかに」.
🔄 Compare with similar forms: いかに/どれほど/どんなに/いかにして
| Form | Feel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| いかに〜か | how much ~ (written, expository) | いかに大切か |
| どれほど | how ~ (written, can exclaim) | どれほど〜ことか |
| どんなに | how ~ (colloquial~general) | どんなにうれしいか |
| いかにして | how (by what means, written) | いかにして〜か |
💡 An exam judgment tip
「いかに/いかに〜か」 = how ~, how much ~, the written, literary version of 「どんなに・どれほど」, seen mostly in exposition, speeches, formal writing. Three uses: ① いかに〜か = how much ~ (degree, often closing with 「〜かがわかる/を示す」) (安全がいかに大切かを教えてくれた); ② いかに〜ても = however ~ (concession) (いかに努力しても限界がある); ③ いかにして = how (method) (いかにして解決するか). Three points: ① it's the written version of どんなに/どれほど (daily speech uses どんなに; see 〈どれほど〉); ② with 「か」 = degree, with 「ても」 = concession, told apart by the ending; ③ 「いかにも」 (indeed, truly) is a different word — don't confuse it. For “how ~, how much ~” in formal exposition, いかに is the most fitting.
❓ Questions you might have
Q: Do 「いかに」 and 「どんなに・どれほど」 mean the same? When do I use which?
Close in meaning (all “how ~” degree), differing in register (written vs colloquial). 「どんなに/どれほど」 = how, to what extent (colloquial~general, usable from daily talk to general writing): どんなに心配したか (how worried I was); どれほど大変だったか (how hard it was). They're the everyday, natural “how …,” fit for any setting. 「いかに」 = how, to what extent (written, literary, dignified, seen mostly in exposition, speeches, formal writing): この経験は、努力がいかに大切かを教えてくれた (this experience taught me how important effort is — an expository tone); 環境問題がいかに深刻か (how serious environmental problems are — written). Its register is higher, more literary, best in formal exposition, speeches, written reports; in casual chat 「いかに」 sounds too bookish, too stiff (normally 「どんなに大変か」 not 「いかに大変か」). Test: daily speech, general writing “how ~” → どんなに/どれほど; formal exposition, speeches, dignified writing → いかに. So in a paper or speech, stress “how important …” with 「いかに重要か」; among friends, say “how hard it was” with 「どんなに大変だったか」. The three are interchangeable, just at different registers: いかに is the most formal/written. (どれほど・どんなに: see 〈どれほど〉.)
Q: How do I tell 「いかに〜か」 from 「いかに〜ても」? Both start with 「いかに」.
By whether the ending is 「か」 or 「ても」 — different meanings. 「いかに〜か」 = how much ~ (marking ‘degree' or an exclamation, ending in 「か」, often followed by 「〜かがわかる/〜かを示す」): この写真は、当時の暮らしがいかに厳しかったかを物語る (this photo tells how harsh life was then — marking degree “how …”); 彼がいかに優秀かは、実績を見れば分かる (how excellent he is, you'll see from his record). It asks/laments “to how great a degree ….” 「いかに〜ても」 = no matter how ~, however much ~ (marking ‘concession,' ending in 「ても」, = どんなに〜ても): いかに忙しくても、家族との時間は大切にしたい (however busy, I want to cherish family time — concession); いかに説明しても、彼は理解しようとしない (however much I explain, he won't try to understand). It marks the concession “even if … to some degree, still ….” Trick: look at the ending of the clause after 「いかに」 — 「か」 = degree/exclamation (how …); 「ても」 = concession (however … still). E.g., 「いかに難しいか」 (how hard) vs 「いかに難しくても」 (however hard). One says “how …,” one “even if … still” — tell them apart by the か/ても ending.
