食べる前に」vs「食べた後で」 — 前に always takes the dictionary form, 後で the ta-form.

Why is 「食べた前に」 wrong? — 前に always takes the dictionary form

Talking about what you do before eating, many learners copy the tense and write 「✗ 食べた前に」 — but whether the event is past or future, 「前に」 always takes the dictionary form (食べる前に). By contrast, 「た後で」 always takes the た-form (食べた後で). This is the core of ordering actions at N5: 前に = not yet done (dictionary form), 後で = already done (た-form). Fix the form and the order never gets muddled.

前に takes the dictionary form, た後で the た-form

Key: the verb before 前に is always dictionary form, before た後で always the た-form — regardless of whether the sentence is past or future. For nouns: 「noun + の前に/の後で」 (授業前に).

How to Connect

PatternVerb formExample
〜前にdictionary + 前に食べる前に
〜た後でた-form + 後で食べた後で
nounnoun + の前に/の後で授業前に

Examples in use

⚠️ Easy traps to avoid

「前に」 is always dictionary form — don't follow the tense. Even for yesterday's event it's 「食べる前に」 (✗ 食べた前に). The verb form is fixed; tense is carried by the sentence ending.

Nouns need 「の」. 授業前に, 食事後で.

後で vs てから. Both mean “after,” but 「てから」 stresses that B follows A closely or as a prerequisite (宿題をしてから遊ぶ = play only after finishing homework); for a plain time order, use 「た後で」.

🔄 Compare with similar forms: 前に / た後で / てから / ながら

PatternMeaningExample
〜前にbefore ~ (the other action first)寝る前に
〜た後でafter ~ (this action completed)食べた後で
〜てからafter ~ (close sequence / prerequisite)手を洗ってから食べる (eats after washing his hands)
〜ながらwhile ~ (simultaneous)音楽を聞きながら勉強

💡 The key point in use

Lock in one line: 「前に」 takes the dictionary form, 「た後で」 the た-form — the verb form is fixed. Learners get pulled off course by their own sense of tense and want to write 「食べた前に」 for a past event — resist! Tense lives in the sentence ending (〜ました etc.); before 「前に」 it's always the dictionary form. Burn that into reflex and you won't lose points on something this basic.

❓ FAQ

Q: For a past event, is 「前に」 still dictionary form?

Yes! “Last night I brushed before bed” is 「昨日、寝る前に歯を磨きました」 (✗ 寝た前に). The past is shown by 「磨きました」; the verb before 「前に」 stays dictionary form.

Q: Are 「た後で」 and 「てから」 interchangeable?

Often close, but 「てから」 stresses “only after doing A, then B” (a sequence or prerequisite: お金を払ってから使う); for a plain time order, 「た後で」 is fine.
