“〜ni tsuite”: About / Regarding (the topic of discussion)
「noun ＋ について」 means “taking 〜 as the topic — to talk/think/write about 〜” — “about 〜.” It marks the subject of the following action (saying, writing, researching, thinking). E.g. 「日本の歴史について調べる」 (research about Japanese history). It's the most standard, all-purpose “about,” natural in both speech and writing.
🧠 Core nuance: framing “this is the topic at hand”
について's job is to mark the focus of a topic: everything that follows (discussion, report, question) revolves around it. It's neutral and emotion-free — simply “as for 〜.” It's often followed by discussion verbs: 言う・書く・話す・調べる・考える・質問.

⚠️ Common Mistakes
- Using について where に対して is needed: for “a reaction aimed at a target” (angry at / opposed to 〜), use に対して, not について.
- Dropping の before a noun: to modify a noun use についての (歴史についての本), not について本.
- Forcing について in formal business: formal writing often prefers the weightier に関して.
- Preceding it with a non-noun: について needs a noun; nominalize verbs (〜することについて).

について is the most versatile and safe way to say “about” — for discussing topics, writing reports, and asking questions, natural in speech and writing. For a more formal/business tone, switch to に関して; but for an “attitude/reaction toward a target,” use に対して. Keep these three straight to precisely express “about / regarding / toward.” A must at N3.
