“〜deshou”: Conjecture & Confirmation (the Weather-Forecast Word) [JLPT N5]

「明日は雨でしょう」「そうでしょう?」 — two uses in one go.

「でしょう」 hides a “confidence dial”

Guesses come with a whole scale of confidence in Japanese: かもしれない (maybe — least certain) < でしょう/だろう (probably — middling) < はず (should — higher, with grounds). 「でしょう」 sits in the middle — an objective “probably …,” which is why weather forecasts love it (明日は雨でしょう). It can also rise in pitch to mean confirmation, “…, right?” This guide covers the attachment, the confidence dial, and でしょうか.

⚠️ Easy traps to avoid

① Nouns and na-adjectives attach bare (drop だ). 雨でしょう, 元気でしょう (✗ 雨だでしょう, ✗ 元気だでしょう, ✗ 元気なでしょう).

② Attach the plain form, not ます. 行くでしょう (✗ 行きますでしょう).

③ でしょう ≠ と思います. でしょう is more objective (forecast-like); と思います is “I think” (subjective). Personal opinion → と思います; an objective prediction → でしょう.

🔄 Compare: the confidence dial

FormCertaintyNuance
かもしれない (it might be)lowmaybe ~
でしょう/だろうmidprobably ~ (objective)
はずhigh (grounded)should ~, by rights
と思いますmid (subjective)I think ~

だろう is the plain/colloquial form of でしょう (more casual, masculine-leaning); でしょうか is the more polite question. (For the full three uses, see the dedicated でしょう・でしょうか guide.)

💡 The one thing to remember

The best thing about 「でしょう」 is its objectivity — it neither states things flatly nor flags them as merely “my” opinion, which is why forecasts and formal settings favor it. To pin down how sure you are, memorize the dial: かもしれない (maybe) → でしょう (probably) → はず (should), and it's obvious which to reach for. In everyday confirmation, a soft 「〜でしょう?」 is far warmer than a blunt 「〜ですか?」.

Connection Rules

How でしょう attaches

Part of speechPlain form → + でしょう
verb (plain)行く → 行くでしょう
い-adjective高い → 高いでしょう
な-adjective元気 → 元気でしょう
noun雨 → 雨でしょう
でしょう attaches to the plain form (a noun/な-adjective doesn't add 「だ」).

Use 1: Conjecture (probably 〜)

The speaker's supposition — more objective than 「と思います」, common in weather forecasts and formal predictions.

Use 2: Confirmation / Seeking Agreement (…, right?)

With rising intonation and 「?」, it becomes a confirming tone that seeks agreement.

でしょう vs だろう

「だろう」 is the plain/colloquial form of 「でしょう」 — exactly the same meaning.

FormSettingExample
でしょうpolite / formal / forecasts明日は晴れでしょう。 (It'll probably be sunny tomorrow.)
だろうcasual / masculine明日は晴れだろう。 (It'll probably be sunny tomorrow.)
だろうねcasual confirmation大変だろうね。 (That must be tough.)
でしょうねpolite confirmation大変でしょうね。 (That must be tough.)
Female speakers also use でしょう rather than だろう; だろう sounds more masculine.

でしょう vs と思います

ExpressionCertaintySubjectivity
でしょうmediummore objective
と思いますlow–mediuma personal opinion
はずですhigh (grounded)grounded certainty

でしょうか: Polite Questions

「でしょうか」 is a polite way to ask — more courteous than 「ですか」, common in formal settings.
