“Nande・Dōshite・Naze”: The Three ‘Why' Brothers [JLPT N5]

なんで, どうして, or なぜ — the same “why,” from casual to formal.

The “why” trio: なんで・どうして・なぜ — a matter of formality

For “why,” Japanese has three: なんで (most casual), どうして (neutral, all-purpose), and なぜ (most formal, written). Asking a friend “why were you late?” → 「なんで遅刻したの?」; analyzing a cause in a paper → 「なぜこの現象起きるのか」. This guide helps you pick the right one for the setting — so you don't blurt out 「なんで」 in a formal one.

The three: from most casual to most written

Same meaning, different formality: なんで < どうして < なぜ. When unsure, 「どうして」 is safest.

The three side by side

FormFormalitySetting
なんでmost casualfriends, family, daily
どうしてneutral, all-purposemost situations
なぜmost formal, writtenpapers, reports, formal

Examples in context

⚠️ Easy traps to avoid

Match the setting. In a formal report or to a senior you don't know well, avoid the very casual 「なんで」 (it can sound rude); when unsure, use the neutral 「どうして」.

「どうしても」 means something else. どうして + も = “no matter what / (can't) at all” (どうしても行きたい = I want to go no matter what; どうしても分からない = I just can't understand) — not asking “why.”

Spoken “why” often takes の/んですか. Asking a cause, sentences often end in の (なんで遅れたの?) or んですか (どうして遅れたんですか?), showing you want the backstory.

🔄 Compare: なんで / どうして / なぜ / どうしても

FormNuanceExample
なんでwhy (most casual)なんで?
どうしてwhy (neutral, all-purpose)どうして?
なぜwhy (most written/formal)なぜか
どうしてもno matter what (≠ why)どうしても無理

💡 The one thing to remember

Remember one line: なんで (loosest) → どうして (middle) → なぜ (most formal). Chatting with friends, 「なんで」 is most natural; unsure how close you are, or slightly formal, use all-purpose 「どうして」; save 「なぜ」 for writing and formal speech. Get it right and your Japanese sounds nicely calibrated.

❓ Common questions

Q: Do the three really mean the same?

The core “why” is the same; they differ in formality and feel. なんで is most casual (sometimes emotional), どうして most all-purpose, なぜ most formal and cool (good for objective analysis).

Q: Is 「どうしても」 related to asking why?

No. 「どうしても」 means “no matter what / (not) at all” (どうしても諦めない = I won't give up no matter what). It looks like どうして but is used completely differently — don't mix them up.
