“〜aida vs 〜aida ni”: During 〜 / While 〜 (seizing the chance) [JLPT N4]

「話している間、静かに」vs「昼寝している間に、洗濯した」 — the whole stretch of time, versus one moment to seize within it.
「間」 vs 「間に」 — one 「に」, a big difference
「先生が話している間、静かにする」 (stay quiet the whole time the teacher speaks) vs 「先生が話している間に、メモを取る」 (while the teacher speaks, take notes) — one 「に」 apart, different meanings: 〜間 = throughout the whole period (the second clause is ongoing); 〜間に = get something done within that period (the second clause is a one-time action at some point). This guide sorts this very-commonly-missed N4 pair.
Core: 間 (ongoing throughout) vs 間に (seize the moment)
- 〜間 = ongoing for the whole period (the second clause is also continuous): 赤ちゃんが寝ている間、そばにいた (I stayed beside the baby the whole time it slept).
- 〜間に = do something within that period (the second clause is one-time/instant): 赤ちゃんが寝ている間に、洗濯をした (I did the laundry while the baby slept).
Test: second clause is “kept ~ing” → 間; “got something done in the meantime” → 間に.
How to Connect
| Form | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜間 | ongoing throughout | 寝ている間 |
| 〜間に | done within the period | 寝ている間に |
| noun + の間(に) | period | 夏休みの間に |
Example sentences
- 先生が話している間、静かにしてください。(Please stay quiet the whole time the teacher speaks.) — 間 (ongoing)
- 日本にいる間に、できるだけ日本語を使う。(While in Japan, use Japanese as much as possible.) — 間に (seize)
- 子供が昼寝をしている間に、洗濯をした。(I did the laundry while the child napped.) — 間に
- 電車を待っている間、本を読んでいた。(I read the whole time I waited for the train.) — 間 (ongoing)
- 夏休みの間に、免許を取りたい。(I want to get my license during summer break.) — 間に
⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid
① Ongoing → 間, one-time → 間に. 「寝ている間、電気をつけていた」 (kept the light on throughout = ongoing) vs 「寝ている間に、電話が来た」 (a call came while sleeping = at one point).
② English says “while” for both, so the 「に」 is easily dropped. Test: is the second part “getting one thing done in the meantime”? If yes → add に.
③ Attachment before 間: verb ている-form / dictionary form, i-adjective, or noun + の (走っている間, 留守の間).
🔄 Compare: 間 / 間に / うちに
| Form | Nuance | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜間 | ongoing the whole period | 寝ている間、そばにいた (I stayed by their side the whole time they slept) |
| 〜間に | get something done within it | 寝ている間に洗濯した (I did the laundry while they were asleep) |
| 〜うちに | while still ~ (before it's too late) | 熱いうちに食べる (eat it while it's hot) |
💡 How to remember this
「間 vs 間に」 is a favorite N4 test pair; one image separates them: 間 = “doing the same thing the whole time” (a line); 間に = “at some point on that line, get one thing done” (a dot). If the second clause is “kept ~ing / stayed ~,” use 間; if it's “seized the chance to do something (once),” use 間に. Remember “line vs dot” and you won't miss it.
❓ Common questions
Q: 「寝ている間」 or 「寝ている間に」?
Look at the second event: done throughout (kept the light on, stayed beside) → 間; just got something done in that window (did laundry, a call came) → 間に. Line → 間, dot → 間に.
Q: Are 「間に」 and 「うちに」 the same?
Very close — both “while.” 「間に」 simply means “within that period”; 「うちに」 adds “while the state still holds, before it's too late / changes” (熱いうちに食べる = eat while hot, 若いうちに = while young).

3. (B) 間に ── ‘did laundry (a one-time action) while the child napped' — seizing a window of time → 間に.
4. (B) 間に ── a one-time event (a message came) happening within the period → 間に.
5. (C) ── 間 (continuous) pairs with a continuous state (ずっと家にいた); 間に pairs with a one-time action.
