JLPT N4 marks the pre-intermediate threshold. It covers around 1,500 words and more complex grammar, including applications of the te-form, conditional clauses, giving-and-receiving verbs and basic keigo.
Who Is N4 For?
Learners who have passed N5 or have at least six months of study under their belt and can handle basic communication in Japan. N4 is one of the minimum Japanese requirements for attending a language school in Japan.
N4 Key Exam Points
- Must-know grammar: 〜ている, 〜てしまう, 〜てほしい, 〜ておく, 〜てみる, conditionals (と・ば・たら), and giving-and-receiving verbs (あげる・もらう・くれる)
- Must-know vocabulary: more advanced verbs and adjectives, plus an introduction to compound verbs
- Must-learn keigo: polite (丁寧語) forms beyond ます・です
