“That's right,” “indeed it is” — agreement and confirmation backchannels, with examples. (JLPT N4)
「そうですね」「そうですよ」「そうですか」 — one ending changes everything
In Japanese conversation, 「相槌 (aizuchi)」 — short backchanneling phrases — are vital: they keep talk flowing and show you're listening. And 「そうです」 with different endings (ね/よ/か) does completely different jobs: そうですね = agreement, backchanneling “yeah” (or thinking); そうですよ = informing, emphasis “that's right”; そうですか = receiving info “I see, is that so.” This guide sorts this super-useful set of backchannels.
Core: the ending decides the backchannel's function
Same 「そうです」, swap the ending, and the function changes:
- そうですね = agreement/backchannel (yeah, right) — also thinking aloud, 「そうですね…(let me think)」.
- そうですよ = informing/emphasis (that's right) — telling the other the info/confirmation.
- そうですか = receiving info (I see, is that so) — a response to news.
The key is ね (empathy)/よ (conveying)/か (receiving).
The three functions
| Form | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| そうですね | agreement (empathy) | 「寒いね」「そうですね」 |
| そうですよ | informing (conveying) | 「本当?」「そうですよ」 |
| そうですか | receiving info (I see) | 「休みです」「そうですか」 |
Examples in context
- A:今日は寒いですね。B:そうですね。(A: It's cold today. B: Yeah, it is.) — agreement
- 「これで合ってますか?」「そうですよ」(“Is this right?” “Yes it is.”) — informing
- 「田中さんは今日お休みです」「そうですか」(“Tanaka's off today.” “I see.”) — receiving
- 「次、どうしましょう?」「そうですね…」(“What next?” “Well… (let me think).”) — thinking
- 「終電、もう出ましたよ」「え、そうですか!」(“The last train's gone.” “Oh, is that so!”) — receiving (surprise)
⚠️ Where learners slip up
① Don't mix the three. ね = agreement (empathizing), よ = informing (telling new info), か = receiving (I got it, I see). Wrong ending, wrong nuance.
② 「そうですか」's intonation sets the tone. Falling 「そうですか↓」 = plain receiving (I see); rising 「そうですか↑?」 = half-doubtful, confirming (really?). Judge by intonation.
③ A drawn-out 「そうですね…」 = thinking. Answering a question with 「そうですね…(let me think)」 is a natural buffer, not “agreement.” It's how Japanese buy thinking time.
🔄 Compare with similar forms: そうですね/そうですよ/そうですか
| Form | Function | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| そうですね | agreement/thinking | empathy (ね) |
| そうですよ | inform, affirm | conveying (よ) |
| そうですか | receive, I see | receiving (か) |
💡 Learning tip
Backchannels are the lubricant of Japanese conversation — a timely 「そうですね」「なるほど」 makes you seem attentive and keeps talk smooth. The key here is the ending: ね = I agree with you (empathy), よ = I'm telling you (conveying), か = I got it (receiving). Especially useful is 「そうですね…」 when asked a question (let me think) — it buys thinking time naturally, far better than silence. Imitate the timing of Japanese backchannels in dramas and your Japanese instantly sounds natural.
❓ FAQ
Q: 「そうですね」 vs 「そうですよ」 vs 「そうですか」?
By the ending (= function): そうです「ね」 = agreement/backchannel (siding with them: 「寒いね」「そうですね」); そうです「よ」 = informing/emphasis (telling them info: 「合ってる?」「そうですよ」); そうです「か」 = receiving info (hearing news: 「休みです」「そうですか」). ね empathizes, よ conveys, か receives.
Q: Is 「そうですね…」 when asked a question “agreement”?
Not necessarily. A drawn-out 「そうですね…」 is often a thinking buffer (= let me think), not “agreement.” When asked something that needs thought, Japanese naturally lead with 「そうですね…」 before answering, to buy time and soften. It's a very authentic backchannel use.
