“3 pencils, 2 sheets, 1 book, 1 dog” — how shape and type decide the counter, with examples. (JLPT N4)
「鉛筆3本」「紙2枚」 — counting things by their “shape”
「本を3冊」「鉛筆を2本」「紙を5枚」 — to count things in Japanese, you can't just say a number; you pick the right “counter” by the object's shape and nature: long/thin things take 「本」, flat things 「枚」, books 「冊」, small animals 「匹」. This guide sorts the most common counters, how to choose them, and the sound changes (3本 = さんぼん), covering counting at once.
Core: pick the counter by “shape/nature”
Counting = number + counter, chosen by the object's traits:
- 本 (ほん) = long/thin: pencils, umbrellas, bottles, phone calls (a call also uses 本).
- 枚 (まい) = flat/thin: paper, tickets, shirts, CDs.
- 冊 (さつ) = books: books, notebooks, magazines.
- 匹 (ひき) = small animals: cats, dogs, fish, insects.
- 人 (にん) = people (1人 ひとり, 2人 ふたり are special).
Main counters
| Counter | For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜本 (ほん) | long/thin | 鉛筆3本 |
| 〜枚 (まい) | flat/thin | 紙2枚 |
| 〜冊 (さつ) | books | 本5冊 |
| 〜匹 (ひき) | small animals | 猫1匹 |
| 〜個 (こ) | small things (general) | りんご3個 |
Examples in use
- 本屋で本を3冊買った。(I bought 3 books at the bookstore.) — 冊
- 紙を2枚ください。(Two sheets of paper, please.) — 枚
- 鉛筆が5本ある。(There are 5 pencils.) — 本
- 犬を2匹飼っている。(I keep 2 dogs.) — 匹
- さっき、1本電話があった。(There was a phone call just now.) — 本 (phone call)
⚠️ Where learners slip up
① Pick the counter by shape. Long/thin → 本 (pencil, umbrella), flat → 枚 (paper, ticket), books → 冊, small animals → 匹. Chinese counters don't map exactly, so memorize by Japanese's shape logic.
② 「本」 changes sound. 1本 (いっぽん), 3本 (さんぼん), 6本 (ろっぽん), 8本 (はっぽん) — number + 本 has geminate/voiced changes, the most-missed reading (likewise 匹: 1匹 いっぴき, 3匹 さんびき).
③ 1 and 2 people are special. 1人 (ひとり), 2人 (ふたり); 3人 is regular (さんにん). Memorize those two.
🔄 Compare: 本/枚/個 (when unsure)
| Counter | Nature | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 〜本 | long/thin | ペン・傘・瓶 |
| 〜枚 | flat/thin | 紙・皿・切手 |
| 〜個 | small lump (most general) | りんご・卵 |
| 〜つ (一つ〜) | general (1–9, kun'yomi) | りんご一つ |
💡 The one thing to remember
Counters are a hurdle in Japanese counting, but don't be scared — memorize the highest-frequency ones first: 本 (long/thin), 枚 (flat), 冊 (books), 匹 (small animals), 個 (general), and look up the rest as you go. Two practical rescues: ① when unsure, small things take 「〜個」 or kun'yomi 「一つ・二つ」 (1–9) safely; ② memorize the sound changes (1本 いっぽん, 3本 さんぼん) — the most-missed in listening/speaking. Master counters and shopping and ordering flow much better.
❓ FAQ
Q: What if I don't know which counter to use?
Two safe bets: ① small things take 「〜個 (こ)」 (りんご3個, 卵2個 — general for small lumps); ② use kun'yomi 「一つ・二つ・三つ…(ひとつ・ふたつ・みっつ)」, general for 1–9, object-agnostic (りんご一つ, いす二つ). When you can't recall the specific counter, these two rescue you. Add 「本・枚・冊・匹」 as you get comfortable.
Q: Why is 「3本」 read 「さんぼん」, not 「さんほん」?
Because the counter 「本」 undergoes sound changes (gemination, voicing) with certain numbers: 1本 (いっぽん), 3本 (さんぼん), 6本 (ろっぽん), 8本 (はっぽん), while others (2本 にほん, 4本 よんほん) don't. 「匹」 is the same (1匹 いっぴき, 3匹 さんびき, 6匹 ろっぴき). There's no simple rule — just practice the readings.
